Day Walks

Day walks are usually close to London (a journey time of less than an hour) with easy access to train stations. Previous day walks include The Chilterns, sections of the South Downs Way, along the Grand Union Canal and around Oxfordshire. Check train times for any alterations.

Non-members are very welcome to come along on all day walks. Feel free to either just turn up or if you have any questions in advance of the walk, please use the Contact Us menu.

Sunday 28th March - Ramsgate to Margate

An 8-mile walk along the coast from Ramsgate to Margate led by Marta Dudkowska, taking in the famous white cliffs, beautiful bays and even the house where Dickens wrote “Great Expectations”.  The route is split between beaches and cliff tops and follows the Viking Coastal Trail and Thanet Coastal Path.

Meet: Ramsgate station, 11:00.

Coming by train: From London St. Pancras, there is an 09:40 train direct to Ramsgate.  This is the new Javelin high-speed train, which gets us to Kent quickly but does cost £31.50 return.  However with a Groupsave ticket 4 people can travel for the price of 2, making the cost more reasonable.  Be at the main ticket office at 09:15 and look out for other Ibex members – ask for a return ticket to Margate as that’s where we’ll be coming back from.

Please check with National Rail closer to the date for any alterations. If your travel involves the tube please check www.tfl.gov.uk for planned closures.

Coming by car: There is parking at Ramsgate station.  The walk finishes at Margate, where you can catch the train back.

Maps: OS Explorer 150 and OS Landranger 179.

Please bring: Rucksack to carry snacks and a packed lunch and water/drink/flask, waterproofs and spare warm clothing. Although much of the walk is on the beach, walking boots are a good idea for the cliff-top section. Please avoid wearing jeans as these do not dry quickly if they get wet.
