Weekend Away - Cragside NT Basecamp, Northumberland

Thursday 9th to Monday 13th April (Easter Weekend)

Spend Easter in the beautiful north of England. The National Trust Basecamp is situated in a vast wooded estate, home to Cragside’s red squirrel population, 15 miles north-west of Morpeth (grid reference OS Landranger map 81, 072027). According to the information pack there are ‘huge rocks, tall trees, tumbling streams and miles of woodland walks’! See the National Trust Website for more details.

Accommodation for the weekend comprises two attached stone cottages overlooking Tumbleton Lake. The cottages are well appointed and warm (fully centrally heated). We shall be dining in on all three nights and with Nigel as Head Chef the meals will be outstanding. There are 16 places available so it would be advisable to book early.

Sunday May 17th - The Chilterns

A 24km/15mile circular walk through the lovely but hilly area of the Chilterns north west of High Wycombe led by Jim and Viv Nevill. We will initially head east and take in the beautiful Hughenden Valley before returning via West Wycombe and the climb up on to the southern end of Bledlow ridge back to Saunderton

Meet: Saunderton Railway Station 9.50am.

Coming by train: There is a 8.54am train from Marylebone arriving at Saunderton at 9.46am.

Coming by car: There are car parking facilities in a lane adjacent to the station.

Bring: Rucksack to carry waterproofs, drink and packed lunch (pub stop not guaranteed). Usually a good idea to wear walking boots in case it is muddy. Please avoid wearing jeans (which do not dry quickly if they get wet).

Tuesday April 14th - Slide Show - Annapurna Trek
A slide show on trekking in the Annapurna region of Nepal with Damaris Steele.

Weekend Away - Newlands Valley, Lake District

Friday 1st to Monday 4th May (May Bank Holiday)

The Gordon Walker chalet in Stair, near the Newlands Valley, has been booked for the early May bank holiday weekend. This purpose-built accommodation has room for 16, and is an excellent location for getting on to any of the fells that surround Keswick, including Skiddaw, Grasmoor and the Buttermere Fells; ascents of Catbells, Maiden Moor, Causey Pike, Hindscarth and Robinson all start within 30 minutes walk. The chalet, run by the Rambler’s Association, has a drying room, common room and kitchen and appears to be very comfortable. So why not wander lonely as a cloud (or in good company) in the Lakes in Spring-time?

Sunday April 26th - Winchester Loop

Join Dave Wilson for a walk in the Winchester area. The walk will start from Winchester station and probably be a loop south-east on one or more of the Pilgrim’s Way and South Downs Way. There are various distance options, but we’ll likely aim for something around 12-14 miles, depending how we go. Bring: Rucksack to carry waterproofs, drink and snacks/packed lunch. Usually a good idea to wear walking boots in case it is muddy. Please avoid wearing jeans (which do not dry quickly if they get wet).

Meet - Winchester Train Station

Coming by Train -Catch the 08:35 from Waterloo to arrive Winchester around 10:10.

Coming by Car - Park at Winchester Station Car Park

You can either just attend the day walk or there is also the option to travel down to Purbeck on the Friday evening and do a day walk on Saturday as well. See the Weekend Trips section for more details.
