This 2-day course is designed to introduce you to a range of core skills that will enable you to enjoy and move about the UK’s mountains in winter conditions competently and confidently.
The main topics to be covered are:
• Selection and organisation of personal kit appropriate to winter hill walking
• Personal movement skills on snow, including kicking steps and using the ice axe for walking, self-belay, cutting steps, and self-arrest
• Use of crampons in ascent/descent
• Emergency procedures
• Avalanche awareness and safe route choice
• Core techniques of winter navigation
Evening sessions may include a winter navigation talk and avalanche awareness talk. The programme is fairly flexible taking into account individual needs and aims, weather, etc.
The course is residential and includes bed and breakfast in a twin en-suite room for 2 nights available from 3pm on the Friday 7th February (day before course). Dinner on the Saturday evening. Use of the Glenmore lodge facilities. Linen and towel provided. Shuttle bus to Glenmore Lodge (departs Aviemore station 5:20pm on Friday and Sundays). Packed lunch and afternoon tea on Saturday and Sunday. Instruction, use of kit and in-course transport.
An Ibex training grant of £50 will be available for the first 6 people to apply (covers the residential cost of accommodation, breakfast and dinner).
