Judith, Jim and Viv are planning an 8 day trek in the Ticino Alps, in south-eastern Switzerland bordering on to Italy, which is one of the lesser visited mountain areas of the Alps. They do not reach the great heights of some illustrious neighbours but offer fine walking in high valleys and over cols, some of which approach 2,800 metres.
The plan is to fly to Zurich on Friday 21st June (a variety of airlines operate from London’s airports) then take the train to Airolo where our walk begins. We will then backpack in an anti-clockwise direction, staying at a variety of refugios and small hotels, nearly all offering half-board. Finishing at Redi-Fiesso a short distance from the start we will then return to Airolo and hence back to Zurich on Sunday 30th June for the return flight. The walks will involve height gains of up 1300 metres and on average a distance of 13 km per day.
Apart from plane, train and bus fares the trip looks like it should typically cost 70 Swiss Francs (£55 at current rates) a day at refugios for bed and half-board. At hotel -restaurants prices vary according to whether single room or dormitory occupancy, ranging from 30 to 70 Francs. Evening meals and breakfast are extra. All other costs are up to you.
We are currently planning for a maximum of 8 places, including the three of us, on the trip. Some of the small hotels have limited spaces so we cannot guarantee that we will be able to book for the full number so we will have to operate on a first come first served basis
